Crocker Avenue, Los Angeles
As I drove through Skid Row one Saturday morning, I saw this woman with striking red shoes. I stopped to ask her if I could take some pictures, and she was very pleased. We were on Crocker near 4th street, and i noticed that she was meticulously gathering bits of trash and other objects from the street, and setting them on fire in a little charcoal grill she had on the sidewalk. She burned the mattress she is pictured laying on the night before.
Old Friends
The needle exchange located around the corner is a daily necessity and ritual for many addicts on Skid Row. They can go, pick up lunch, clean drug paraphernalia and sterilization supplies, and often donated food and toiletries. People have known each other and lived in the neighborhood for years.
Bridget
Bridget stands at the corner of 5th and San Pedro. She is taking a break from her recycling activities....she spends hours each day, pushing a shopping cart loaded with recyclables. Cans, bottles, metal, plastic, anything at all that she can sell by weight at the recycling center located on Alameda. She routinely digs through garbage bins and mountains of trash piled at street corners to mine for bits she can sell.
Victoria
Victoria stands at the corner of 5th and San Pedro in Skid Row. There were several striking murals on the walls here, and they have unfortunately been erased because the area is being converted to a medical clinic. The corner used to be known as the "Cuban Corner" for the homeless Cuban expatriots who inhabit and do business there. The corner is also known as the "spice corner" because the synthetic cannabinoid known as Spice is bought and sold.
